Senioritis
Overview:
What is senioritis? Senioritis symptoms are prevalent during the spring semester of a student's graduating year. Every high school graduating class has suffered from this malady to one extent or another. Senioritis attacks the nervous system, affecting sleep patterns, logical thinking, muscular coordination, balance, facial control, language ability, impulse control, and one's sense of humor. Affected teenagers usually display some or all of these symptoms during school hours. Teachers have noted an increase defiant behavior and/or laziness.
Causes:
Until more studies can be conducted, authorities have identified several root causes of senioritis taken from anecdotal records. First, the erstwhile student may feel that now that he/she has successfully( relatively speaking) completed three and half years of high school, he/she should be able to "let off some steam" and be given "some slack" by reproachful adults. Second, the stress of the unknown or "what comes after graduation" may be so great that the teenager cracks and engages in aberant behavior, such as, not doing school work, avoiding work of any kind, staying out past midnight during the school week, imbibing alcohol or drugs, and being disrespectul to authority figures. Third, "I just wanna have some fun" complex sets in as the young person theorizes that there is no "fun" to be had after graduating high school; therefore, he/she feels desperate to make up for all the times they missed having fun during their high school career thus far. (i.e., senior pranks)
When to seek curative intervention:
Of course each case presents itself differently and must be handled according to individual circumstances.
